Check it: Vogue India Tackling Color Prejudice

Vogue India has faced quite a bit of criticism in the past for featuring “fairer” models that don’t necessarily showcase the real Indian color-scape. However, the new issue is garnering some attention for finally breaking the mold and featuring darker models on its cover. Check out the full Vogue article here and tell us what you think of the cover.

I just read the comments on Vogue India’s site page about the article. I agree w/those who feel Vogue India barely went any darker than usual. Also, what’s with placing a blond-haired model in a WHITE bathing suit smack in the center of the DARKER INDIAN issue? People, that’s the modeling middle finger to using darker models. The bottom line: white is still right and still takes front and center no matter the race of the source of Vogue. When will women stop hating themselves and starting owning the smart, confident and capable human beings that we often already are? I’m a brown, African-American and this white-aesthetic worship all over the planet breaks my heart. Some of the most beautiful women are Indian, Brazilian, Somalian, mixed, West Indian, Native-American and yes, white. Sadly, the (white-driven? media) only allows for a white aesthetic. We’re all beautiful; now we just need to be strong, too.
Bigeeta, I completely agree with you. Even though they pub it as the “color” issue, the girls look pretty much the same– and on the lighter end of most Indian women! And what is up with the blonde in the center!? Do we really think that is what Indian women look like?
yes, it’s a great cover.
sadly, on pinkvilla, some of the comments were negative on it (there is a DESPERATION among some Indians to be perceived that India is largely a Caucasion nation):

they look stunning … it’s a model cover.. they will have high cheekbones and might color their hair blonde.. get over it.
Indian beauty not only comes in different shades, we all have different faces (yes, some of us are mistaken for Latina.. but we’re not.. we’re Indian too). the models look INDIAN and stunnning and represent the mod-hip new desi of today.
the bronze look is STUNNING!!!
Yes, they’re gorgeous! Based on the article title – there’s no intent to break the color barrier here though. They seem to be referencing about the trend among many white people in some western countries to tan, destroying their own skin trying to achieve the bronzed look that many Indian women have naturally.
Based on a previous comment, it sounds like there mabe be complaints about the facial features: only high cheeckbones need apply.
Vogue has a definite focused on that particular face type. But other mags in India are more even handed when it comes to features if not skin tone.
