Payal and Priyanka, the fashionistas behind the online blog sensation, High Heel Confidential, never imagined in their wildest dreams that their blog would become what it is today. They started back in 2007 as two friends who shared as everyone says “a passion for fashion” and decided to set up an online portal to share their daily thoughts on what caught their eye, who was seen wearing what, and where it was from. Slowly, their blog traveled through cyberspace all the way to the big cities of India, where it quickly became a household name. They focus on Indian celebrities, posting pictures of their best and worst outfits and also introduce new designers to their readers, offer awesome giveaways, and bring their readers closer to high-street as well as Indian couture. Today, High Heel Confidential is its own entity. They have been featured by all the powerhouse publications in India: Vogue India, Times of India, Verve India, Elle India, and Cosmo India. Both Payal and Priyanka live in the United States (they keep their location super confidential). They are true Brown Girls who have made their mark in the Indian fashion scene.
Their style is fresh and quirky, the blog is easy to read, and they are not afraid to tell it like it is. Even the name they chose is simple yet intriguing! The realness behind their words is what makes the blog so appealing and so addictive (yes, addictive – I’m definitely guilty of that). According to Priyanaka, they treat the blog as a chat between two girlfriends. Personally, I have been a huge fan of the blog since 2007 when I first stumbled upon it and have followed it ever since. I got the chance to speak to Payal and Priyanka for their insight on the blog, their success, and all things fashion. Here is what the lovely ladies had to say!
BG. What keeps you so connected to the Indian fashion scene especially since you’re both living in the States?
P & P. A close connection to our roots and (very) frequent travel.
BG. Who is the best-dressed Indian celebrity? The worst?
P & P. Toughie. Most people have had their moments (good and/or bad). Sonam Kapoor keeps it fresh, Sameera Redy has totally turned it around, Prerna Goel rarely ever fails and Kalyani Chawla doesn’t ever seem to take a bad photograph.
BG. What’s the most fashionable Indian city to visit?
P & P. Every single one. There is just so much color, texture and region-specific style; it’s hard to pick one. Cities like Delhi and Bombay have the fashionable sense that totes the latest trends and names, but the temple-frequenting ladies in their silk saris in Chennai or an old city in Hyderabad is just as exciting to us.
BG. What’s your favorite place to shop for Indian clothes in Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata?
P & P. There are so many options these days… right from multi-label housing retailers, designers’ flagship stores, online retailers or that one local street with the secret steals!
BG. What is the most essential piece of clothing/accessory for every girl?
P & P. A great fitting pair of jeans, a crisp tailored white shirt, a day-to-evening dress and one statement and/or investment piece of jewelry.
BG. What embodies an Indian woman in today’s generation?
P & P. Embracing her individuality with fearlessness.
If you are not addicted to the blog yet, I recommend you check it out as soon as possible. It is fun, fabulous, and fashionable – and provides an excellent means of procrastination during class or at work (trust me).
