Music Review: Bollywood Soundtracks in January

by Hera Ashraf

What to miss and what to hit.

January came with the release of many new soundtracks of upcoming films. The soundtrack of any Indian cinema film determines whether or not the movie will be worth the watch. It is what lures the audience to the theaters.

Many anticipated films were released this month such as, “Race 2,” “AkaashVani,” “Inkaar,” and “Mumbai Mirror.” If you happened to miss the soundtracks to these films, here is a quick list of what you should download right away and what isn’t worth the listen.

Looking for some party music? The “Race 2” soundtrack is your best bet. Composed by Pritam, this soundtrack is upbeat and fresh. You can dance to this music at a club or blast the speakers in your car. It will definitely keep you bumped and is nothing less than addicting.

“AkaashVani” brings a collection of slow and romantic songs. Although I’ve heard better, the track overall is a pleasant hear. It definitely grows on you with more listens. Music director, Hitesh Sonik, does a good job of creating tunes that just make you want to sway with the music.

The “Inkaar” soundtrack is a rock-wannabe album. This is a disappointment coming from a renowned music director, Shantanu Moitra. The heavy guitar, drums, and deep voices make all the songs sound the same. It seems like they were going for dramatic music for the film but they fell short.

“Mumbai Mirror” is the typical Bollywood masala type of soundtrack. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, so you may have to decide for yourself whether or not it’s your’s. It is nothing unexpected and full of energy. I have mixed feelings about this album. Various music directors compose the music, so each song has its own uniqueness to it.
