Meet The Staff: Arpita Mehta

by Arpita Mehta -

I have always been enamored by those interviews that journalists do with celebrities for magazine articles, where they ask short questions so that the readers can learn more about their favorite celebrity. Instead of writing a boring paragraph about myself, I thought I’d do something different.

I am no celebrity of any kind (yet) but here’s what I have to say about myself:

Describe yourself in one sentence: I am a public relations major at Boston University, passionate about the communication world and social media.

Passionate about? Reading, dance, writing, women’s rights, Bollywood movies, good food, and traveling.

Favorite author? It’s a battle between Jhumpa Lahiri, Chitra Banerjee Divakurani and J.D. Salinger (clash of the cultures, I know).

Favorite book? Too many to list but Catcher in the Rye is an all-time favorite.

Favorite city? Mumbai.

Fun Fact: I interned at the Vogue India office in Mumbai two summers ago

Travel Wish List: Greece, Turkey, South Africa, Japan, Hong-Kong, Italy, Australia and lots more.

Why BrownGirl? I came across BrownGirl while surfing the Internet and I knew this was something I would love. BrownGirl was a place for South Asian girls to connect and have an online support system. Writing for BG has been an absolute pleasure because it’s a great place to share stories about anything from Bollywood, to the latest sari trend, to political scandals in India.

Three Indian women that have impacted my life: My mother, Shabana Azmi, and Jhumpa Lahiri.

One thing I would change about Indian society? Ending the practices of child brides and dowry/honor killings

Two words to define you: Independent and Ambitious

I cover fashion, features, and lifestyle stories for BG. Anything that catches my eye, I try and share with readers. I love that BG was created to give South Asian girls like myself an outlet to speak our minds.
