by Simerjeet Sahota

And Instagram. Because, let’s face it – I probably would never have posted again if it weren’t for the awesome faux-hipster feeling that Instagram gives me. I mean, just look at that photo – the lighting…the coolness…the everything. Swoon. And yes, I am aware that I’m super behind on this technology but to that I say, Shut up, iPhone users.

Aside from my disgusting obsession with a non-tangible mobile phone app, it’s (nearly, kinda sorta) spring and as cliche as it sounds, prints (especially florals) are all over the place. In fact, the best use of floral pattern I’ve seen has been on pants. This is coming from the girl who took 6 months to buy a pair of non-denim colored jeans.

So click through, like some things, don’t like them. Doesn’t matter to me. I’m too busy Instagraming my life.

[Everything in the photo minus the shoes is from Target. I'm a bit of a groupie. Clockwise from top: Target watercolor dress, $20ish; Tucker for Target dress, also $20ish; Vera Wang for Target Shoes, let's say also $20ish; Jason Wu for Target skirt, $30 - oh yeah, I caved and bought one. It was on sale and I don't really have any commitment to my morals. Sue me].

Warehouse Drop Waist Floral Dress.
I don’t have $100 for a dress – well, I could…if I stopped eating. But that’s not the point. The point is that I don’t, but if I did, I’d buy this dress. Flirty, feminine, and oh-so-20s.

Asos Ankle Grazer Trouser.

Spring is here and bright colors are everywhere. Neon color has dominated the runway and created a surge among the fashion street dwellers.

by Megha Hamal @megorchid

Spring is here and bright colors are everywhere. Neon color has dominated the runway and created a surge among the fashion street dwellers. Even though this color is so popular, a lot of us are afraid to try it. It’s quite simple to take on a trend if you stick to a few simple rules.

Here are 5 quick rules to follow when adopting this trend!

1. Don’t overcrowd by piling accessories. These colors can stand on their own.

2. Not sure about a neon dress or neon pants? Don’t worry! Try a hint of neon in accessories (bangles, belts and bags) to embrace the spring.

3. Go monochromatic.

4. Try this color in interesting cuts and shapes to add extra drama.

5. There are gorgeous shoes (flats and heels) in neon colors if you’re not sure about going head to toe with this color.

by Simerjeet Sahota

At some point basing titles of posts on rap songs is going to get old. Until then, I’m trying to bang out as many ridiculous references as I can. The title of this post alludes to the classic song, “Rack City” by Tyga. This is also post number one hundred on my blog. Or as Tyga, and now I, say, one hundid. Did I mention that it’s awesome that people read this and take me seriously?!

I’m pretty sure that I’ve already done a post on stripes and if I really cared, I’d probably gone back through my one hundred posts (yay!) to figure it out. But let’s face it, I’m lazy and stripes deserve more than one post, damn it.

Stripes are beyond time and reason and unique color combinations just make them even trendier. I’m on this neon color kick so anything with neon stripes makes me want to empty my bank account. Particularly I’m a fan of the big color blocks separated by thin stripes but honestly, any variation of horizontal stripes scream classy. And polished. And just all around awesome.

Some of my favorites from this past Sunday!

Angelina Jolie looking radiant in a structured velvet Atelier Versace gown with a high slit.

She proves that you can never go wrong with black.

Michelle Williams in a vintage-feeling peplum Louis Vuitton frock, accessorized with a 19th century Fred Leighton bow brooch at her waist.

Michelle is one of the few modern-day Hollywood actresses that do “vintage-right.”

Penelope Cruz in custom lavender Giorgio Armani gown. In this Armani number, she looks dazzling and regal.

Viola Davis in emerald Vera Wang gown. Viola who was nominated for the “Best leading actress,” also shows that when it comes to fashion, she can do no wrong.

Stacy Kiebler in liquid-gold lamé Marchesa gown. She looks like a walking goddess. The gown is dramatic but very red-carpet worthy!

by Naila Sheikh

This past Sunday, February 5th, while many of you gathered to watch the Superbowl, fashionistas and the fashion media from around the nation were anticipating the launch of Jason Wu’s limited collection at Target. Shoppers and eBay hawkers were ready in action to attack the aisles of Target at precisely 7 AM with the opening of doors to ‘Wu’s Merchandise Heaven’ or should I say, ‘Money Haven’? The goods were taken off the aisles with the greed to sell the merchandise for triple the price!

Oh, the injustices in this mean, mean, money making world! Imagine the cashier lines filled with disinterested faces, but arms loaded with merchandise that is just for them! Turn around you. Yes, you. The girl behind you needed that size and she would have looked great in Jason Wu’s dotted full sleeved chiffon blouse paired with a pencil skirt. The same girl behind you couldn’t sleep thinking and pondering over this blouse, wanting it so badly. She stood in line like you did, but unlike you she doesn’t want to make a profit off of it. She will, like others, pay $39.99 and ask nothing in return, but to look fabulous. Read my lips: RESPECT. DESIGNER. WEAR.

Rest assured, in the above described exaggeration and/or realistic portrayal (you choose), the girl in the scenario was not the real-life me. The night before, on Saturday, I came across a couple of articles online and I had just found out about the launch. I was excited to see Jason Wu’s affordable creations and his Paris-inspired designs for regular Target shoppers. The marketing for his launch is done very tastefully by Target. In a commercial for the collection, we see a black cat wreaking havoc in the most beautiful way possible: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=PXV7EqCcqfI

The same black cat is also incorporated in his scarf and tote bag. I am personally not a big fan of black cats (I find them freaky. Sorry, cat lovers!), but I must say, the cat is stylish for wearing the red piece accessory – I’ll give him that.

A little [Wikipedia] background on the 29 year old designer:

“Born in Taiwan, Wu moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada at age nine and attended Eaglebrook School in Deerfield, Massachusetts and Loomis Chaffee, in Windsor,Connecticut. He learned how to sew by designing and sewing for dolls, and went on to study sculpture in Tokyo. Wu continued this career path at sixteen by learning to create freelance doll clothing designs for toy company Integrity Toys under the lines “Jason Wu dolls” and later “Fashion Royalty”. The following year, he was named creative director of Integrity Toys. He decided to become a fashion designer while spending his senior year of high school in Rennes before graduating from The Loomis Chaffee School in 2001, and studied at the Parsons The New School for Design at The New School. He later interned with Narciso Rodriguez.”

His career-launcher debut was made by First Lady Michelle Obama who bought four dresses from Wu wearing one of them for a segment on Barbara Walters Special shortly before the November 2008 election. She wore another, a custom-designed one-shoulder, floor-length white chiffon gown, at the inaugural ball on the night of President Barack Obama’s inauguration.

Some of his runway pieces that are drop-dead-gorgeous, won’t you say?

What really fascinates me about the young designer is not only his young age and amazing accomplishments, but I am very much in awe of his story. It’s the kind of story that immigrant implants of this country are proud telling their children. As a fellow 1st generation (South) Asian American, I am always interested in knowing the Wu before his fame and before his Wu -ing (read: “wooing”) abilities in mesmerizing crowds after crowds. It’s great to see a dream come true!

As for my shopping craze; I did visit Target early in the morning on Sunday, but avoided myself getting stamped by greedy eBay ‘ers at the dawn of day. I opted for a 9:30 AM very comfortable, very chill trip to Target to observe, analyze and conclude my taste for Jason Wu.

Not bad. Not bad at all. However, the chiffon dotted blouse that I was eyeing was not on the racks and given Target’s limited stock, in store and online, I was a little disappointed.

Some of his pieces made me think of what I’d wear if I was to visit rich folks for a Hampton weekend at the beach. I will conclude this post by sharing some of my in-store snaps of that glorious day in Target.

Here I am posing with a $39.99 Jason Wu for Target tote bag. I really like the style with the horizontal stripes and the material was of good quality. Light wear but practical. Very nice!

by Simerjeet Sahota

When the New Year rolls around, everyone’s always so busy picking up new, practical resolutions such as working out more, eating right, managing their finances, whatever. But not me. Don’t get me wrong – I tried to be one of those normal people. Instead, I’m literally hemorrhaging money from buying ridiculous, impractical things. I don’t know what’s gotten into me the past few months but I’ve literally purchased things I probably won’t be wearing in oh, I don’t know – a month. For example, this ring:

Ring: Asos, $10ish

One of the first times I wore it, someone asked me not to get mad and punch them in the face (which was kind of awesome). The second time I wore it, someone asked me if I had my finger pierced. Now I won’t lie and say I don’t love the conversation starting-ability of this ring, but let’s be honest, it’s kind of effing ridiculous. More ridiculous? It comes in neon yellow. Which I totally want. Duh.

And then look at these satin pants (yes. Satin pants):

Shirt: Kohl’s, $15 (purchased years ago)

Pants: H&M, $35

Shoes: Charlotte Russe, $35

Okay this may not be so bad. When I initially bought them I was still hurting from the fact that I missed the opportunity to purchase satin leggings (they would have gone so well with everything! The one time – the one time - I showed some self restraint…) but I was pleasantly surprised. They actually do go with everything although I kind of like them dressed down. And maybe with my Satin blazer? Eh. We’ll see about that one.

And then since it just makes sense:

There was really no question about whether I was going to buy these fake studded shoes. It was just a matter of when. They’re like a pair of knock-off Louboutins that all celebrities were wearing a couple months ago. Except they were a billion dollars less and will probably only last me for 6 months, 12 if I don’t wear them until summer. It’s a compromise I was willing to make.

Then I got this skirt:

Shirt: Forever 21, no clue on the price, I’ve had it for 5 years

Skirt: Asos, $50

Shoes: Vera Wang for Kohl’s, $20 (Black Friday sale)

Purse: Shi by Journey’s, $30

Neckalce: Forever 21, $10 (maybe less…actually probably less)

And I mean with this pose, what’s not to love? It’s an asymmetrical hem, a lace skirt with a little bit of hot-pant-style lining underneath. And the minute I saw it I loved it. I fear that it’s a bit Spanish-flamenco dancer-y. But I’m going to go with it (I really really really cannot wait to wear colored tights with it. I’m literally jumping up and down in my chair at the thought). Also those shoes blow my mind. They’ve got this strappy-ness that I’m dying for and the heel is not too high. They’re actually kind of practical. Shocking.

But this – this is the one piece I’ll never regret buying:

This purse. God….this purse. No lie – it’s a knock-off the Alexander McQueen clutches that I’ve seen on every runway. But again it was $30 and not a million-something. So I feel totally fine about it. I want to marry it.

And because I love it so much:

It’s all about the detail.

And then, because this “photo shoot” was turning out to be hilarious and awkward, my friend forced me into another outfit:

Dress: Asos, $50

I have nowhere to wear this dress (except in my living room, for pictures for this blog). But I bought it anyway way back in October. I like to see it as the beginning of my buying crazy things phase. It’s cape-y on one side, asymmetrical in the hem, belted on the other side, and made of a indecipherable shinny fabric. And I love every inch of it.

The hard part about buying these kinds of things is the practicality factor. You want it you want it you want it – but do you need it? The answer is of course always: NO. But here’s the thing, and I don’t know about anyone else, I get this endorphin rush from buying something I know no one else will have, no one else would think of buying, or no one else thinks they can pull off. Because anyone can pull ANYTHING off- its 100% just doing it. And it’s my job to spread that message.

Finally, and I’ll end on a sane note here – Jason Wu for Target hits stores Febuary 5th. AND IT’S AMAZING. So many stripes, just so many stripes….and its all perfectly simple. Check out the collection, mark your favorites, and get in line….behind me of course.

[S/O to MZ, PZ, and McZ for making this photo shoot absolutely awkward and hilarious.]

By Megha Hamal

I can see how the phrase “power dressing” can sometime be misleading. When people think of “power dressing,” the first two things that come into some minds are shoulder pads and court shoes! Even though shoulder pads and court shoes have seen their days, ladies!

In today’s day and age, power dressing is all about looking professional and modern without losing your personality. It could be as subtle as wearing the right perfume or carrying the right bag. Even though a nice pair of red heels and a fuchsia pink dress are fun to own, they are not the safest bet if you want to be taken seriously at work.

Here are 5 basic tips!

1. Invest in Blazers – As a professional woman, it’s not a bad idea to invest in a polished blazer. Black is a universal color that goes with most outfits, so look for a quality blazer that will last a long time. I personally own four blazers.

• Basic black blazer – My basic black blazer not only works for professional settings but I can pair it up with a cocktail dress and skinny pants on weekends. When it comes to buying a black blazer, versatility is key.

• Brown tweed blazer – A blazer like this particular one is a great alternative piece for my closet, especially when I am bored wearing the same blazer every day.

• Grey blazer – My grey blazer looks great on colorful spring and fall dresses. It definitely creates a nice balance to my overall outfit for work. It keeps the seriousness without losing my femininity.

• Black and white blazer My black and white blazer was an impulse buy. When I saw it for the first time at a store in Chicago, I thought “Old Hollywood.” It’s an item that has an easy sophistication feel to it. Even though I might not wear my black and white blazer every day, it’s a piece that I won’t regret buying ten years down the road.

2. What does your bag say? A woman’s bag says a lot about the woman herself. When choosing a work bag, try to stay away from bold colors. Look for a classic style that works for professional settings. Think Chanel, Fendi, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren or even Longchamp, if you can afford it. However, if you aren’t looking into spending a good amount of money on a work bag, always aim for basic colors like black, beige or brown. And, remember size is a key! Work bags shouldn’t be as big as a vacation tote.

3. What’s in your makeup bag? When was the last time you looked into your makeup bag and analyzed what really works for you and what doesn’t? A lot of women are so fixated on heavy makeup even at work that they forget the basic rules of makeup for work. An occasional red lipstick doesn’t hurt but remember to keep everything else subtle when sporting one.

4. Do you have the right shoes? Wearing the right shoes to work is important not only for safety reasons but also because it says a lot about the person wearing it. If you work for a marketing/creative firm- you can experiment with your looks but if you work for a law firm, I’d suggest that you choose conventional pieces. However, a pair of black pumps never goes wrong. So, when in doubt- think black!

5. What about jewelry? Just because it blings doesn’t mean it‘s right for work. I don’t know if I would call myself, a “pearl lover” because I tend to love modern pieces. However, when it comes to work, I try to stay strategic and practical. Invest in pieces that are classy and elegant- something that wouldn’t look like you borrowed it from your 18 year-old-sister.

Remember, power dressing is all about making the right fashion choices with the right attitude.

Dina Patel, Co-Founder of Didi’s Wardrobe, took that concept and turned it into a very unique online company.

Didi’s Wardrobe, Brown Girl’s most recent sponsor, is an online marketplace for a variety of pre-owned Indian and Pakistani clothing, accessories, and jewelry.

Dina, a fellow smart, hip, beautiful Brown Girl, sits down with us to talk about her inspiration and business.

What was your background and what inspired you to start your business?

After I graduated from the University of Michigan, I decided to join the world of investment banking in New York City. I initially planned on working in the industry for only two years. Instead, I ended up working in banking for 10 years with a break in between to complete my MBA at Kellogg. I definitely learned a lot from my banking years – especially how to work in a high stress environment where we were marketing our own business. After 10 years, I decided it was time to take those skills to the next level and start my own business. It wasn’t easy to step away from a secure job, but I realized that if I didn’t take the risk now, I probably will never do it later in life.

At the website we learned that this was a collaborative project with you and your co-founder. How long was this idea in motion before it came into being the website we see today?

Didi’s Wardrobe was an idea a friend and I had in 2001 when we lived in New York, but it was something we couldn’t take action on due to our demanding careers. However, in 2009 we decided to start researching different business ideas in Indian fashion. We initially decided to change our business plan to renting Indian clothes, but ended up coming back full circle to our original idea of the consignment concept. We realized that there was a plethora of inventory out there already, so why not provide a way for individuals to share those beautiful saris and lehengas with each other across the U.S. We began our process of building the website at the end of 2010 and launched on November 15, 2011.

The basic premise for Didi’s Wardrobe is to create an online marketplace that connects buyers and sellers of new and pre-owned Indian clothing, costume jewelry and accessories. For first timers, how does the site work?

That’s right, the site is developed for both individual buyers and sellers on the site. It’s really an ‘ebay’ for new and gently used South Asian wear.

Didi’s Wardrobe was created for people like you and me to sell our South Asian wear that we spent good money on and to find something new for that next event without breaking the bank. It’s a great way to “share or borrow” clothes from your desi friends across the country. Why spend $500 on a Lehenga that you will wear once. Instead, you can find something similar for $50-$100, wear it once and then resell it again on the site.

For buyers we created a very friendly user interface where you can search products by Women, Men, Children and Jewelry & Accessories. Each of those categories is broken down further such as Lehengas, Saris and Salwars. Buyers can then narrow down their search by size, price or condition rating. The site provides further detail with photos, descriptions, measurements and even reviews by other buyers of their products.

For sellers we are providing two methods to sell items. Sellers can either post their items through our easy Post a Sale process or ship a box of their items to us through our We Post for Your process. If sellers post on they own, they will upload their own photos, measurements and items details through our easy six-step process. Once an item sells, they will receive notification to ship the item. We understand that many people are swamped between work, family and friends and just may not have the time to post, so we are happy to sell their stuff for them. All they have to do is fill out our contract online and ship us their items. We take care of the rest.

Can you tell us about the quality of the products that are sold on your site and the ease of selling/buying?

The items on our site range from brand new to gently used. Any item that shows a five star rating is brand new and has never been worn. Many of us end up overbuying during trips back to India or Pakistan, so we have a number of sellers that have posted brand new items on the site. Most of the other items on the site are in fairly excellent condition because in most cases someone has worn something once or twice and doesn’t want to be seen in it again at the next wedding (since the photos are already posted on Facebook!).

The process to buy and sell on the site is quite easy. Buyers can see fairly extensive details on each item and even have the option of sending a message to the seller if they have questions on sizing or colors. Once a seller is ready to purchase, they are taken to our secure payment gateway, PayPal. The seller is then notified of the sale and will be asked to mail the item within two business days. Once the item has been delivered, Didi’s Wardrobe processes the payment. As I mentioned previously, the selling process is quite easy with our two different methods of Post A Sale or We Post for You.

What has been the biggest challenge for you and your co-founder? The best part?

Educating the consumer. It’s a new concept, so it takes time for people to fully realize all of the functionalities we have to offer.

The best part is the response we have gotten. I have heard time and time again that it’s a concept we needed. We’re very excited to help cater to the wedding season in the upcoming months as brides are looking for affordable and easy ways to dress their guests, family members and bridesmaids.

Any words of wisdom for young women hoping to start their own business in the future?

I was initially very hesitant to take the risk of starting my own business. I was scared of leaving that security, but many of my friends and family assured me that I created a strong foundation with my career if I ever need to go back to the corporate world. I think that probably rings true for many women that are looking to start their own business – self-motivators and hard working individuals will always be able to land another job. At the end of the day, employers view entrepreneurs as highly motivated individuals with a broad skill set. Follow that passion – if you don’t, somebody else will.

Chanel's Pre-Fall 2012 show was inspired/influenced by India. Ya, I know. There's the show and the pre-show and the post-show and the show show - ugh. Fashion is needlessly complicated to say the least.

by Simerjeet Sahota – Ohio State Graduate

…If I don’t talk about this.

First off: I don’t really know who “they” are. I’m really just referring to a general sense of paranoia (cause that’s basically how I roll).

Second off: the “Indian-card” thing? Not real. (I want to prevent any messages coming to my inbox on this one from the beginning). It’s kind of like the “V-card” or the “race-card” – i.e. not a real card.

Third off: Because I’m really just wasting your time now, let me get to the point – Chanel’s Pre-Fall 2012 show was inspired/influenced by India. Ya, I know. There’s the show and the pre-show and the post-show and the show show – ugh. Fashion is needlessly complicated to say the least. Anyway, because I’m, you know, Indian, it just makes sense that I should be the high authority on this collection.

Additionally, I love it because I have a ton of Indian stuff and if this is going to turn into a full blown trend, I am going to have so much money to spend on other things.

Embellished pockets with classic French tailoring. Yup. Let’s get this party started.

There’s something about this collar that I love. Plus the design is so minimally over-the-top.

Totally contradicted myself and I’m fine with it.

God! So clean! And that necklace – I’m an undecided fan of the tassel but this is just beautiful.

The thing about Indian clothing is that it can be, oh I don’t know, over the top. But I love the cut on the skirt (I’m predicting a lot of this tulip, cut higher in the middle business – mark my words) because it adds volume while still being simple. The white on white on white isn’t looking too bad either.

I. Want. That. Scarf. (in addition to the entire outfit).

Yeah. I could wear this to work EVERY DAY.

This is probably one of the most Indian pieces I’ve seen in the collection and I love the metallic leggings (good for not just your Indian inspired clothing but for pairing with other pieces as well). Again, not over the top but this tunic has enough jazz to make you stand out.

I think it’s obvious I have a thing for the skirts that were featured. Also whatever is going on with the necklace/neck area I EFFING LOVE. I’m all about giant collar necklaces so I’m extremely happy right now.

Bloody hell. Give me one in every color. The draping, the detail, the all of it – just wow.

So Indian that I love it. And I don’t know what was going on with the necklace/belt across her chest but let’s be honest, I would wear my necklace/belt that way if I could (I say that because while I may be fashionably risky, I’m not that fashionably risky).

Something that’s very very Indian and so clean and sharp at the same time. I love the asymmetrical cut – again it adds volume and makes the whole look super interesting.

Um. Can I have some of that, please?

If I haven’t mentioned that I’m a fan of menswear than shame on me. If I haven’t mentioned I’m a fan of Indian menswear then may I be struck with lightening! As much as I love the glitz and glamour of woman’s Indian clothing, I love love love the comfort of the men’s. This kurta-style ensemble, by far, is the thing I’d wear the most.

I love the Greek-Indian mix here. So flowy, so light and yet so stunningly done. I tip my invisible hat to you, Lagerfeld.

It's Winter and let's say hello to sweaters. Sweater sweaters sweaters. From cardigans to cropped, cable-knit to boy's styles, I actually totally hate them.

by Simerjeet Sahota

Wow. So – just to clarify – I’m not dead. Totally alive still.

I guess I should take the time real quick to explain my unintentional absence but really does it matter? I’m back! And I’ve got lots of post ideas lined up – you might be so lucky as to see multiple posts a week (You’re probably not that lucky fyi). It’s been a hectic few months but I’m recommitted, rededicated, and older (since the last time I posted I did turn a year older. Bleek. But my new found maturity found me at J. Crew applying for a store card. I swear I could keep that place in business all on my own).

Anyway, enough mindless one-sided banter and down to business. It’s Winter and let’s say hello to sweaters. Sweater sweaters sweaters. From cardigans to cropped, cable-knit to boy’s styles, I actually totally hate them. Going through my closet this weekend I realized every year I bounce into winter sales with the thought of buying a ton of sweaters that I’ll wear all season long. Turns out it’s a bit of a pipe dream. I actually hate sweaters and only two have ever made it season-to-season. I usually end up throwing the majority of them out before spring ever hits and I just layer up my cardigans (the one sweater I CAN stand) over dresses and jeans.

All of this was before the cable-knit revolution. Oh man, do I love cable knit. It was practically born to layer and they’re so non-itchy, It’s got be a Christmas miracle. They’re great for layering (if you get the ones that are crocheted together) or cropped (the texture of a closely-knit cable sweater is impeccable) or big and bulky (for those days you’re lounging around watching copious amounts of reality television). My favorites are the off-shoulder ones because I love a hint of shoulder (Well. It sounds kind of lame when I put it that way). I’ve gotten two cable-knit sweaters (both from Express for the ridiculous price of $50 and $30. I’ve been on a bit of a bender recently, I’m just going to be honest) and the one is perfect for layering over sparkly tank tops. The other is great for layering over tights and jeans. Overall you can’t go wrong with these options and let’s face it – they’re pretty much the money-sweater.

Yup. I reused this picture. I think you underestimate my laziness.

Sweater: Express, $50

Skirt: Banana Republic, $30

Tights: Missoni for Target, $17

Shoes: Kohl’s, $10

But here’s another one cause I’m nice:

Sweater: Express, $50

Tank top: Really f-ing old (Probably Kohl’s)

Shorts: TJMaxx, $5

FYI this was taken at the Natural History Museum in NYC. My friend was trying to make some comment about my culture. I’m not so sure what it was now…oh right. The history of arranged marriage. Yup.
