Congratulations on your recent engagement! Can you take us back to that special moment and share the story of your proposal?
Thank you! It was quite a surprise, actually. Rishi told me we were attending a Merrill Lynch private banking event, but we ended up in a beautiful courtyard with a harp player playing Indian music. That’s when I realized what was happening. It was a private and special moment between us, and I’m grateful for that. The engagement sign in our suite at The Breakers in Palm Beach was the moment it all sank in. It was when it all felt real, different and so wonderful all at the same time!
Your journey with Rishi has been from childhood friends to soulmates. When did you realize he was the one you wanted to marry?
We’ve known each other since we were kids, and people always teased us about getting married. As we got older and went our separate ways, there was always something at the back of our minds. The turning point came when we were both single and spent more time together. It felt like a natural progression from friendship to a romantic relationship. But here’s a funny twist to the tale – back in 2008, when we were naming our family dog, my dad suggested the name Rishi. I hesitated, thinking maybe it wasn’t the right choice. Little did I know, that small decision held a hint of our future together!
Moving on to wedding plans…are you leaning towards a big fat Indian wedding or a more intimate affair?
It’s a tough choice! I’m torn between a grand celebration with multiple concerts and a more intimate, private affair. Desi culture has a way of expanding guest lists, and even my version of “intimate” is around 350 people. I’m still figuring it out, but there are two things that are absolutely certain: no cake and no wedding speeches!
Talking about the wedding aesthetic, do you see yourself breaking traditions or leaning towards a more traditional wedding?
I envision an old India, Lahore vibe for the pictures and videos — a traditional and aesthetic feel. But when it comes to the actual wedding, I want it to be super fun. No extended hours in the makeup chair; I want to enjoy with my guests, party, and maybe switch to sweatpants after a certain time. I want to be fully present and soak in every moment of my wedding.
You’re also in the process of finding your dream home. How’s that going, and what’s the plan after the wedding?
We’re excited about finding our dream home. I’m not planning to stay at my family home after marriage; it’s time to start our life together. We’re exploring options, considering whether we want to live by the water, in the city, or suburbs. My dad is supportive; he just wants us to build our dream life.
As a fashion influencer, have you started outfit-hunting for the big day? Any designers you’re eyeing?
Absolutely! I’m considering Abhinav Mishra and Falguni Shane Peacock. Mishra’s aesthetic resonates with what I have in mind. As of now, I don’t see myself as a red bride; I want something different. Let’s see; I might switch over. It’s all about finding the perfect fit for the big day. I’m excited about my upcoming trip to India, I am hoping to be inspired and energized on the trip and come back knowing exactly what I want!
With all the wedding planning, how do you manage the stress? Any pre-wedding self-care rituals you’re indulging in?
I’m focusing on hair care with homemade oil, skincare with Korean methods, and incorporating rosemary and mint into my routine. I’m also trying puppy yoga soon, which sounds like a fun way to de-stress.
Dream honeymoon destination? And any extravagant plans for the bachelorette party?
Bora Bora is our dream honeymoon destination, but Bali or a South African safari is also on the list. As for the bachelorette, my friends might have different plans, but my dream is a resort with endless beach and spa services. Let’s see; they might have something more lively in mind!
If you could have one celebrity attend your wedding, who would it be and why?
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. I’d love to have his Qawwali performance; it would be a dream come true. Music is crucial for me, and I want that element of a show at my wedding. I love music and I’m a performer at heart when it comes to music and dance. So for me, I just picture at least my ceremony having some element of a show to it. I really want it to be something where there is a performer or an orchestra, or something where that music[al] element is really brought in, to set the ambiance.
Summing it up, Monica, what’s your advice for others navigating the intricate world of wedding planning?
Prioritize your happiness over societal expectations. Don’t feel pressured to throw an extravagant party; focus on building your dream life together. Personal touches matter, like customizing your vows or incorporating shared interests into the celebration. Communication with your partner is key, and remember, it’s about the couple, not just the celebration. Take time for self-care and enjoy the process; it’s a once-in-a-lifetime journey.
