Balancing two cultures is hard. I’m a proud Tamil girl, but I’ve lived in the US for my entire life — a little over 16 years. I speak with an American accent, I eat way too much pizza and fro-yo and I live for K-pop. On paper, I’m a regular American teenager.
On the other hand, I could eat chicken biriyani for days on end. Kuthu songs are my jam (they’re better than any Western dance song), and if I wanted to, I could totally rock a lehenga. While I’m a regular American teenager in some ways, in other ways, I’m a full-on Indian girl who has a crush on Nivin Pauly and can eat her way through an entire box of murukku.
While I’m proud of my dual identity, many of my friends act like I have to choose between the two. I have one friend who acts like an expert on Hinduism, Indian politics and cricket, while others completely reject their Indian side. I even have a Hindu classmate who said Hindus worship cow poop, perpetuating harmful stereotypes about his own culture and religion (this didn’t go over too well with the Hinduism expert, as you might imagine).
Cow poop and cricket aside though, I knew that their other sides were hidden somewhere. That first girl? I heard she and her best friend obsessing over K-pop a couple years ago. And that boy who bashed his own religion? He’s a hardcore Vijay and Rajnikanth fan! Who would’ve thought?
These friends and classmates of mine, unfortunately, haven’t figured out how to balance their Indian and American sides. However, those who have only grown up in a single culture might find this balancing act hard to understand. They don’t understand why I don’t talk a lot when I visit relatives in India — I’m so ridiculously self-conscious about my accent in a place where everyone speaks fluently without one. They don’t understand why I stopped wearing a bindi to school — they don’t understand that it drove me crazy when people asked, “What is it?”
I’ve only recently felt comfortable with showing my Indian side at school. I realized I shouldn’t feel embarrassed about my culture when I was eight years old and talking to another Indian-American friend. In front of her was a plate of completely untouched sambar and rice. When I asked her why she hadn’t eaten it yet, she replied:
“All my classmates point and ask me what I’m eating, or they’ll just say ‘Ew!’ It’s really embarrassing. I wish my mom wouldn’t pack me Indian food for lunch sometimes.”
Even at my young age, I related to her embarrassment. Granted, third graders can be brats, but it’s still traumatizing when someone declares to the entire table that the chapatis and curry your mom so lovingly prepared for you were gross.
Afterwards, I realized it was my responsibility to be proud of my dual identity.No one can really know me without knowing what the ohm symbol that hangs around my neck stands for, without knowing why I don’t know that much about pop music and without knowing that I would take dosas and chutney over pesto pasta any day (I might take alfredo and pasta though).
I might feel embarrassed about these things, but I can’t let that stop me from embracing it, because this is who I am. I am about dressing up for Diwali and then stuffing myself on Thanksgiving a couple weeks later. I am about curling up on the couch to watch “Harry Potter” or “Andaz Apna Apna.” I am about embracing my Hindu roots and history, but also about diving into Greek and Roman mythology. These things define me, and I can’t sacrifice either of my cultures if I want to be true to myself. I am Indian, I am American and I am proud.

Holi is a Hindu festival that celebrates the coming of spring and is observed near the end of winter. It’s also referred to as the festival of colors or the festival of love. Although my daughters and I are not Hindus, (we are Sikhs) we still celebrate Holi. Our Holi celebrations always include reading about this festival, making colorful art, playing with the colorful powders, and making some delicious, traditional sweets. This is always such a great occasion to discuss the diversity of Indian culture with my daughters. I use this opportunity to teach them about inclusivity and respect for different cultures around the world. All across India, different states celebrate this festival in their own meaningful ways.
My first experience celebrating this beautiful festival was in university. My roommates, friends and international students put together a lovely day of Holi celebrations outside. We were completely covered in variety of colors — pinks, purples, and blues. There was music, laughter, dancing, and an overall joyous atmosphere (including bhang, which is essentially a cannabis milkshake). It was particularly heartwarming to see so many Indian students coming together as a community, so far from home, to connect with such a beloved tradition.
For those of us, brought up in Canada, such celebrations were amazing opportunities to genuinely experience the true spirit of Holi. Similar to how it is done in India, everyone became one – there were no small groups or cliques doing their own thing; class lines and caste systems, predominant across India, disappeared. Everyone joined together; our skin tones hidden under the bright colours of the Holi powders. It surely was an unforgettable time.
As a child, I got to experience Holi only through Indian Cinema. Bollywood films like “Silsila,” “Darr,” and “Mohabbatein” stand out in my memory. The actors are dressed completely in white at the beginning of the song, enjoying Holi celebrations, and are then painted from head to toe, in various bright colours, by the end of the song. Since then, I’ve learned that certain colours hold meaning and significance. Red symbolizes love, fertility, and matrimony; blue represents the Lord Krishna; and green stands for new beginnings.
Now, as a mother, I don’t want my children to experience our culture through a screen. So we bring these Holi traditions into our home in our own creative ways. We certainly tend to get creative since around March there is still ample snow on the ground outside and a chill in the air!
The activities we have fun doing are:
Making rangoli designs using coloured powders (this is a helpful site we’ve used)
Making paper flowers to decorate the house with (like the ones here)
Making tie-dye shirts (we’ve got a kit for this because the girls love it)
Baking a traditional Indian snack, like gujiya (we bake them because I get paranoid about the girls being around hot oil).

This year, Holi falls on the same date as International Women’s Day! To combine the two celebrations, my daughters and I plan on sketching South Asian females we look up to the most, and then adding bright colours using different types of paint. For another element of texture, we might add the paper flowers to these as well. I’m thinking these are going to be frame-worthy pieces of art!

How to talk to your partner about this in a safe/healthy way
Being open with your partner about your symptoms and painful sex may seem like a difficult conversation. Intercourse should never be painful and learning when to stay ‘stop’ is important in communication. Talking about pain before, during and after sex is important also in your own health diagnosis to see if pain symptoms are improving or becoming worse. Having open communication does not only benefit your relationship but most importantly, your own health.
To experience these symptoms may seem taboo or unheard of but quite frankly, they are common in many women. Women deserve to be directed to proper healthcare.

These days, the phrase, “love knows no bounds” doesn’t seem to hold true. For many couples, specifically, those in long-distance relationships, the lengthy and complicated immigration process can keep lovers apart for six to 24 months. Well, aside from the thousands and thousands of miles of the deep ocean in between. I’ve been there; I have been an immigration attorney for 10 years and I found love abroad (my wife was living in the UK when we met).
I was flying across the Atlantic every few months so, as you can imagine, dating was quite expensive (though she quite liked the fact that for our first intentional visit, I paid several thousand pounds for a global migration conference as an excuse for flying over).
Marriage immigration is complex and costly.
